Superserien Week 2 Power Rankings

1. Örebro Black Knights

The Black Knights have been catching everybody off guard so far sitting at the top of the standings with a 4-1 record after five games.

Head coach Branko Mutic has developed an absolutely lethal rushing offense around E-Import runningback Jakub Brezina (475 Yards & 8 TD) alongside homegrown quarterback Victor Ekberg (819 Yards, 8 TD, 3 INT) and QB turned superstar WR Trevor Vasey.

Defensively the team is led by Swedish national team LB Edvin Jönsson (31.5 tackles, 8 TFL & 5 Sacks), who has emerged as an early frontrunner for Sweden’s “Linebacker of the Year” award.

2. Carlstad Crusaders

Last year’s invincible champion Carlstad Crusaders have shown why they were the pre-season favorites to repeat as Swedish champions.

Apart from their loss to the top-ranked Black Knights, they have been nothing short of dominant so far. They have brought in E-Imports Tim Schulz (RB, Germany) and Matteo Mozzanica (WR, Italy) to fill the void that has been left by the departure of standout RB Alexander Kennedy (Nordic Storm) and WR Willem Van Compernolle (New Yorker Lions).

The Crusaders are ranking #1 in both passing and rushing defense, only allowing only 12.4 points per game, good for second best behind the Black Knights.

Former Superserien MVP and 3x “LB of the Year” Mattias Eriksson is once again anchoring down the middle of that defense with 36 total tackles already, on track to becoming Superserien’s tackling leader for a 4th time.

3. Tyresö Royal Crowns

The Tyresö Royal Crowns are once again here to play. They have been a playoff lock the last couple of seasons and are once again sitting in third place with a 3-1 record. It can be said that they have taken care of business so far, having won their games vs. Copenhagen, AIK and spotting a surprise win over Örebro.

Their roster is littered with extremely talented young players and they definitely have the potential to increase their production by the end of the season come playoff time.

Offensively the team is led by QB Jared Heywood (who is yet to return to his MVP caliber form of last year) and star RB Vilgot Valeskog (379 Yards, 5 TD).

However, it is the defense where this team truly shines. Tyresö’s LB group of Ceasar Winsnes, Cole Brockwell and Rory Nethercott is probably the best in the entire league. Their defensive line spots both veterans Malcom Engström (3x “DL of the Year”) and PPI standout Adrian Bekibele, while their defensive backfield features both the reigning “DB of the Year” Sebastian Johansson and current interception leader Dovydas Koncevicius.

4. Stockholm Mean Machines

Last year’s runner-ups had a great start to the season, only for it all to come crumbling down. After impressive wins over Limhamn and the Oslo Vikings in the first two weeks of the season, SMM has been hit hard with the injury bug, losing star QB Dawson Herl, who led the league in almost every statistical category to this point, as well as starting OL Oscar “Backe” Lindberg and E-Import Florian Schorn

With back to back losses vs. Kristianstad and AIK, Stockholm is now sitting at 3-2 having to play the defending champion Carlstad Crusaders next.

Not everything is bad in Stockholm right now. Homegrown RB David Ottander and former Örebro Black Knight Kasper Wedberg are the best one-two-punch in the country and SMM’s veteran WR corps of Matt Retzlaff, Anton Blomgren and Robin Gavelin-Miranda has added Senay Tadesse into their mix. Together they have already accounted for 1,120 yards after just five games.

Watch out for the Mean Machines once they get healthy!

5. AIK

AIK is the surprise of the year so far!

With wins over Limhamn, Copenhagen and now the Mean Machines, they are currently sitting in 5th place with a 3-2 record, just outside the playoffs.

Their two losses came in a Thursday night battle vs. SMM in Week 3 where they narrowly got outplayed 37-42 and a low-scoring affair vs. Tyresö in week 7 (6-7).

Led by homegrown QB Max Lambert - who is making a serious case for “QB of the Year” - the offense also features A-Import WR Joshua Hicks (524 Yards & 4 TD) and young RIG product Morris Rewelj.

The same top-heavy pattern applies to their defense.Former ELF E-Import Josh Akena (Munich Ravens) and homegrown LB Albin Lundstedt have been all over the place for AIK with a combined 66.5 Tackles and five forced turnovers! But most attention is going to young DE Gustaf Ras. The Swedish national team player, who is currently holding multiple D1-Scholarship offers, has already recorded 14.5 Tackles, 6 TFL and 5 Sacks, all while being just 19 years of age.

With Tyresö, Örebro and Oslo left on their schedule, don’t be surprised if AIK ends the season with a positive record or even sneaking into the playoffs.

6. Kristianstad Predators

Everything in Kristianstad is running through A-Import QB Miles Richardson and E-Import WR Lou De Boe (Belgium).Their incredible production has led them to back to back wins over SMM and the Copenhagen Towers, where they scored an average of 45 points per game. With their remaining games of Limhamn, Tyresö, Oslo and Copenhagen, the Predators could be in for a surprise season of their own having only won a single game in the previous season.

It will be interesting to follow their development and see whether or not they can stabilize and establish themselves among Sweden’s top teams.

7. Oslo Vikings

The Oslo Vikings have been underwhelming so far.

Last year’s playoff semi-finalists have only won one game against Copenhagen so far, sitting at 1-4 and third to last in the rankings.

The Vikings have been shutout in back to back games, giving them the (dis)honor of holding the second-worst offense in Superserien.

It is unclear why the Vikings are struggling this badly so far, especially with a roster featuring 4 A-Import players including former ELF Quarterback DeAndre Clayton and reigning league MVP William Sewell Jr.

With three remaining games vs. Krisitianstad, Örebro and AIK, it will be tough for the Norwegians to turn their season around.

8. Limhamn Griffins

Although having already banked two wins this year, the Griffins have truly struggled up to this point. Their offense has been shut out twice and their defense has only managed to keep opponents below 17 points once this season.

But wait – there is light at the end of the tunnel. QB Samuel Jämthammar has dialled back his turnovers from last year and has reliable receiving options in Afred Jennfors and Olof Nilsson.Defensively it’s veteran DBs Klas Mazetti and Ekemina Baleka who carry a lot of the load with standout DL Jonathan Johansson (4.5 sacks) doing the dirty work in the trenches.

With games against the Predators and Towers coming up, the Limhamn Griffins are well in the battle for 5th place!

9. Copenhagen Towers

The Danish champions have had a rough transition to the Superserien.

With the core of the team jumping over to the ELF Nordic Storm, everybody expected a dip in production for the former champions.

So far the Towers are sitting at the bottom of the table, spotting an 0-6 record with games against the Predators and Griffins on hand.

With the right moves in the future and maybe the resurgence of some key players, many of whom are trying their luck in the ELF right now, the Towers could again be a force to be reckoned with. This year it’s all unfortunately pointing towards a last place finish.
