Week 5 is done, and the top teams are continuing to separate themselves from the rest of the league. There weren’t any big surprises this week either, but the games were physical and a few scores stayed close. With the regular season almost over, every win now feels a little heavier and every loss a little harder to come back from.
1. ITU Hornets (5-0) — 21-3 vs IU Bulls
The Hornets remain perfect after another strong win, this time over the Bulls. They’ve now beaten every team they've faced with control and consistency. The Hornets showed us consistency is crucial as two of their touchdowns came from huge running plays, much like they’ve been running all season. The offense looked sharp again, and the defense did exactly what it’s been doing all season – shutting teams down. With two games left, ITU is the first team to clinch a playoff berth this season and they are in full command of the league!
2. Koç Rams (4-1) — 13-0 vs Izmir Halcyons
The Rams picked up another win and did it with a shutout. The game wasn’t high scoring, but the Rams’ defense completely locked up the Halcyons. It wasn’t flashy, but it was solid and efficient. In order to secure a playoff spot the offense needs to stay more consistent next week against the Bulls. This team is looking stronger each week – and getting closer to challenging the Hornets for the top spot.
3. Istanbul Bisons (4-1) — 20-12 vs Hacettepe Red Deers
Istanbul bounced back with a win after their Week 4 loss. It wasn’t the easiest game as they let a pick six on the first drive, but they managed to get the job done against a Red Deers team that’s still fighting hard. The Bisons are still one of the top contenders and if they keep improving, they can be right there in the playoff race until the very end. This week’s matchup against the Hornets will be critical as they will be fighting for the first seed or in danger of not nabbing a playoff spot.
4. Izmir Halcyons (3-2) — 0-13 vs Koç Rams
This was a tough one for the Halcyons. Their offense, which had been so clutch in recent weeks, just couldn’t break through against a strong Rams defense. To make the playoffs and remain contenders their offense needs to step up in the upcoming week but for now the offense seems like it can cause a one and done situation in the playoffs. Still, with three wins and a good overall performance this season, they’re holding up in the top half of the league.
5. METU Falcons (2-3) — 7-3 vs Gazi Warriors
A low-scoring, hard-fought win for the Falcons, but a win nonetheless. Their defense did the heavy lifting, and it was enough to hold off the Warriors. Unlike the previous weeks, the special teams did a good job as they also scored the only touchdown and kept the Warriors offense in bad field position. At 2-3, they’re still alive in the playoff race, but they’ll need to play with more offensive consistency if they want to climb further. The upcoming week against the Red Deers will show if they are ready to fight for a playoff spot or not.
6. IU Bulls (1-4) — 3-21 vs ITU Hornets
Not much worked this week for the Bulls. Facing the top team in the league was always going to be a challenge, but the Hornets just didn’t leave much room for them to make plays. IU was actually consistent against the top team of the league but ultimately, two big plays and a gutsy fourth down call caused them the game. With the season coming to an end the Bulls will face the highly motivated Rams. They need a miracle for the playoff spot but they have to keep fighting to avoid relegation or a playout game.
7. Gazi Warriors (1-4) — 3-7 vs METU Falcons
The Warriors came close again but couldn’t finish it out. Their offense struggled to move the ball and one touchdown from the Falcons was enough to seal the deal. Some wide open dropped passes might have been the turning point for this season. There’s still a fight in this team, but they need to find a way to turn effort into results before time runs out. Facing off the Halcyons will be critical as with a win they also mathematically have a chance to make the playoffs or it will better their chance to stay in the first division.
8. Hacettepe Red Deers (0-5) — 12-20 vs Istanbul Bisons
Another loss for the Red Deers, but they continue to show heart. They stayed close with a strong Bisons team and looked better on defense than in previous weeks. With five losses, their playoff chances are completely gone but they have to keep fighting as their upcoming matchups will show us if they stay in the first division or not.
With just two weeks left in the regular season, the playoff race is getting intense. The Hornets and Rams look like they’re heading toward a top-two finish, but spots below them are still open. Every win from now on could make or break a team’s season. Week 6 is coming, and it's going to matter more than ever.
