Week 4 in the Turkish Football League didn’t have any big surprises, but we did see some more changes in the rankings. Some teams are building momentum, while others are still trying to figure things out. We’re now past the halfway mark of the regular season, and every game is starting to feel more important.
1. ITU Hornets (4-0) — 21-7 vs METU Falcons
The Hornets keep doing what they do best – winning. The first half was a close game at 7-7. Entering the second half of action, they found a way to take control of the game and ultimately sealed the deal in Ankara. The Hornets defense looked strong again, and the offense did enough to stay in control. This is the only undefeated team left, and for good reason. Everything looks solid on both sides of the ball. It looks like the Hornets are the team to beat this season.
2. Koç Rams (3-1) — 28-7 vs Istanbul Bisons
The Rams made a big statement this week. They had a shaky start and at halftime it was tied 7-7. But step ups from Burakhan Bahar (QB #10) and Bartu Memiş (WR #0) changed the momentum. A 98-yard touchdown between the duo might go down as the play of the season. Meanwhile, the defense held strong against the skillful Bisons offense. After a few slow starts this season, this game showed that the Rams are serious contenders again.
3. Istanbul Bisons (3-1) — 7-28 vs Koç Rams
The Bisons had a tough week. Some interesting play designs were fun to watch but unfortunately, they could get into the endzone only once. Defense had some contributions but weren’t able to stop the Rams when needed. A questionable call to keep the offense on the field on 4th down at their own 15 yard line might cause an issue getting into the playoffs. Still, they’re 3-1 and very much in the mix. We’ll see how they bounce back after their first loss of the season.
4. Izmir Halcyons (3-1) — 39-35 vs Hacettepe Red Deers
Game of the season! An offensive battle took place in Izmir and the Halcyons defended their home, even as they trailed pretty much the whole game. In the third quarter it was an 18 point lead for the Red Deers but the Halcyons managed to come back and win in the end. Some defensive struggles were visible in the secondary but Izmir came up clutch with two crucial picks in the fourth quarter. If you have heart issues don’t think about rooting for the Halcyons. Their games are stressful, but they always find a way. That fighting spirit is keeping them near the top.
5. METU Falcons (1-3) — 7-21 vs ITU Hornets
The Falcons had a tough matchup this week and just couldn’t keep up with the Hornets. It was a good first half for them but things went south quickly in the second half of action. They’ve now lost three games in a row, although they’ve faced some strong teams. The offense needs more consistency and the special teams needs to put the offense and the defense in better positions in general. If they want to make the playoffs, they need to start turning things around, and fast.
6. IU Bulls (1-3) — 20-19 vs Gazi Warriors
Finally, the Bulls get their first win! It was close, but they pulled it off. A comeback win in Ankara against the Warriors. Big chunks of running plays helped the team end the losing streak, and the defense stood their ground when needed. The Bulls have been playing better than their record shows, and maybe this win will help them build momentum.
7. Gazi Warriors (1-3) — 19-20 vs IU Bulls
This one will sting. The Warriors had the lead and a real chance to win, but they let it slip away at the end. A critical penalty after their last touchdown cost them the game as the Warriors couldn’t convert the much needed PAT. They’re now 1-3, and if they want to climb the rankings, they have to fix these small mistakes before it’s too late.
8. Hacettepe Red Deers (0-4) — 35-39 vs Izmir Halcyons
It’s another close loss for the Red Deers. Scoring 5 touchdowns, leading up until the end of the game and still losing is hard to stomach. They played well on offense and put up a fight here in Week 4, but they just couldn’t finish the job. They’ve now lost four in a row, and it’s going to be very tough to come back from this. They might be fighting to avoid relegation in the upcoming weeks.
Week 4 gave us some clearer signs of where teams stand. The Rams are heating up, the Hornets are still perfect, and the Bulls finally got their first win. With only a few games left, every week matters more than the last. Let’s see what Week 5 brings!
