The HFL Championship Game had everything fans could ask for. Hard hits, defensive stands, momentum swings, and late-game drama. After an unbeaten regular season, the Budapest Cowbells completed the job, defeating the Győr Sharks to finish the year with a perfect record and lift the HFL trophy.
It wasn't an offensive shootout. Instead, it was a defensive battle for most of the afternoon, with both teams refusing to give an inch.
The game opened with an early fumble by the Cowbells, giving Győr excellent field position. However, the Sharks were unable to capitalize. Moments later, RB/DB Deyvon Butler came up with an interception, putting the ball back in Győr's hands and showing once again why he has been one of the league's most impactful players all season.
Despite both teams moving the football at times, neither offense could finish drives. The Cowbells repeatedly found themselves inside Sharks territory but were stopped before reaching the endzone, while Győr struggled to build any consistent momentum against Budapest's physical defense. After two quarters of football, the scoreboard still read 0–0, setting up an exciting second half.
Everything changed in the third quarter. QB Kelemen Marcell finally broke the deadlock, connecting with WR Tóth Ákos for the first touchdown of the game. Just moments later, the Cowbells struck again as RB Richard Seay Jr. powered into the endzone, giving Budapest a sudden two-score advantage and completely changing the momentum.
The Sharks answered immediately in spectacular fashion. RB Deyvon Butler returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, breathing new life into Győr and reminding everyone how dangerous he is whenever the ball is in his hands.
The Cowbells' defense responded with a timely interception by DB/WR Rogria Donell Lewis Jr., preventing the Sharks from building on that momentum.
In the fourth quarter, RB Richard Seay Jr. added his second rushing touchdown of the afternoon to extend the Cowbells' lead once again. But just when it looked like the game was slipping away, QB Nicholas Christopher Rooney found RB Deyvon Butler for a touchdown pass, cutting the deficit and setting up a tense finish.
The Sharks battled until the very last whistle and believed they had produced the game-changing play late in the contest. However, a controversial officiating decision wiped out both a touchdown and another huge gain, leaving Győr frustrated as valuable opportunities disappeared.
In the end, the Cowbells stayed composed, managed the final minutes, and secured the championship.
Champions at Last!
The Budapest Cowbells have completed a truly unforgettable season, finishing the year with a perfect, undefeated record and the 2026 HFL Championship.
The Győr Sharks deserve plenty of credit as well. After returning to the HFL Final for the first time in years, they battled until the final whistle and proved they belong among the league's best.
In the end, though, this season belonged to the Cowbells.
An undefeated record. A championship trophy. And a place in HFL history.
Congratulations to the Budapest Cowbells, the 2026 HFL Champions.
