HFL Semifinals Deliver Instant Classics: Cowbells and Sharks Advance to the Championship Game

If the regular season was exciting, the HFL semifinals raised the bar even higher.

Two incredible matchups, both decided in the closing moments, gave fans everything they could ask for. The Budapest Cowbells survived a late comeback from the Újpest Bulldogs to win 41–34, while the Győr Sharks stunned the Budapest Wolves with a dramatic 17–16 victory. After four quarters of intense football, only two teams remain standing.

On July 11, the Budapest Cowbells and Győr Sharks will battle for the 2025 HFL Championship.

Budapest Cowbells 41 – 34 Újpest Bulldogs

The first semifinal looked like it would be over early. The Cowbells exploded out of the gates, building a quick 14–0 lead behind another spectacular performance from RB Richard Seay Jr. The league's MVP candidate opened the scoring by adding a rushing touchdown of his own, before throwing a touchdown pass to WR Tóth Ákos just minutes later.

But the Bulldogs refused to back down. RB Owen Lima Van Gorcum got Újpest on the scoreboard with a rushing touchdown, and after DL Billy Hatten recovered a crucial fumble in the second quarter, the momentum slowly started to shift. QB/WR Emhő Lóránt punched in another rushing touchdown before halftime, giving the Bulldogs plenty of belief heading into the second half.

The game quickly turned into an offensive battle. RB Richard Seay Jr. continued his incredible afternoon, adding four more rushing touchdowns and proving once again why he has been the league's most dangerous player all season. The Cowbells defense also stepped up when it mattered most, as DB Leszkován Ádám Zsolt recorded two interceptions and Saliga Norbert recovered a late fumble.

Still, the Bulldogs never stopped fighting. WR Bradley Steven Schlom found the endzone on the ground before DB Vladimir Santana electrified the crowd with a kickoff return touchdown that cut the deficit even further. Then, with only 33 seconds remaining,QB Horváth Domonkos connected with WR Rabi Mulenga Bunga for another touchdown, giving Újpest one final chance.

The Bulldogs successfully recovered the onside kick, giving themselves one final opportunity to complete an unbelievable comeback. However, the Cowbells' defense held its nerve, coming up with a game-sealing interception to end the Bulldogs' hopes and punch their ticket to the championship game.

Győr Sharks 17 – 16 Budapest Wolves

The second semifinal was a completely different type of football game, with defense taking center stage from the opening kickoff.

The Wolves started the stronger side, as QB Tóth Levente found WR Czirók Márton Tamás for an early touchdown. The Sharks answered just before halftime when QB Nicholas Christopher Rooney connected with RB Deyvon Butler for a touchdown, keeping Győr within striking distance.

The battle remained tight throughout the second half. Czirók added his second touchdown of the game to restore the Wolves' advantage, but Rooney once again delivered under pressure, finding WR Várfalvi Péter Patrik in the endzone to keep the Sharks alive.

With both defenses making crucial stops, the game came down to the final minutes. K/DB Szakács Kristóf Gergely hit a field goal, Wolves was leading 16-14.   LB Jakub Veber intercepted a Wolves pass, giving the Sharks one last opportunity to steal the win. K Pogátsa Bendegúz then calmly converted a field goal with just 29 seconds left on the clock, putting Győr ahead 17–16.

The Wolves still had one final drive, but DB Illés Botond came up with another interception just 13 seconds before the final whistle to seal one of the biggest victories in Sharks history.

After trailing for much of the afternoon, Győr completed an incredible comeback and earned its place in the HFL Championship Game.
