CLASSROOM OF CHAMPIONS: D1 ELITE TEAMS GET THEIR GRADES

The final season of D1 Elite as we know it is over. And what a strange year it was.
We saw an undefeated regular season team. We saw a dynasty continue its reign. We saw a newly promoted team shock the league. We saw several historic clubs fight for survival. Most importantly, we saw the beginning of a new era.
For the first time in French football history, standings were not the only thing that mattered. The creation of Ligue Élite for 2027 added an extra layer of drama, controversy, and uncertainty to every conversation.
Some teams won games and still missed out on the future. Others struggled on the field but secured a seat at the table.
As always, these grades are based on results, expectations, consistency, and the overall story of each season.
Class is now in session.
THONON BLACK PANTHERS
Record: 9-1
North Division: 1st
Grade: A+
At this point, calling Thonon a dynasty feels almost lazy. Dynasties eventually slow down. Dynasties become vulnerable. Dynasties show cracks. The Black Panthers apparently missed that memo.
After finishing 9-1 during the regular season, Thonon once again navigated the playoffs and ended the year exactly where everyone expected them to be: holding another Casque de Diamant. What makes their achievement even more impressive is that 2026 may have been one of the strongest years in recent D1 Elite history. Cannes looked unbeatable. The Flash remained dangerous. Several teams took meaningful steps forward.
It didn't matter.
When the season reached its defining moments, Thonon remained the standard.
The Panthers will also enter 2027 as one of the flagship organizations of Ligue Élite, meaning the target on their back will only get bigger.
The scary part?
They seem to enjoy that.
Teacher's Comment: The rest of the class is considering filing a formal complaint about competitive balance.
IRON MASK CANNES
Record: 10-0
South Division: 1st
Grade: A
No team had a stranger season.
The Iron Mask finished the regular season undefeated. Ten games. Ten wins. They dominated the South Division, looked like the most complete roster in France, and reached the national championship game.
For several months, they looked like the team most likely to finally dethrone Thonon.
Then came the final.
And then came the announcement that arguably shocked French football even more.
Despite a 10-0 regular season and a trip to the Casque de Diamant, Cannes will not be part of Ligue Élite in 2027.
Whether you agree with the reform or not, that reality will remain one of the defining talking points of the season. It is difficult to imagine a stronger sporting argument than an undefeated regular season.
Yet football is not always decided solely on the field.
The championship slipped away, and so did a place in the new top competition.
That should not overshadow what was still one of the best seasons in club history.

FLASH DE LA COURNEUVE
Record: 7-2-1
North Division: 2nd
Grade: A-
The Flash continue to operate like one of French football's most reliable institutions.
Every year they compete for titles. Every year they make deep playoff runs. Every year they remind everyone why their trophy room requires structural reinforcement.
A 7-2-1 record reflected exactly what we've come to expect from La Courneuve: physical football, disciplined execution, and a roster capable of beating anyone in the country.
The problem is that expectations remain unfairly high.
For most teams, this season would be celebrated without hesitation.
For the Flash, anything short of a championship always feels slightly incomplete.
Still, they remain one of the cornerstones of the future Ligue Élite and will enter 2027 as one of the most legitimate challengers to Thonon's throne.
Teacher's Comment: Consistently excellent. Still searching for extra credit.
MOLOSSES D'ASNIÈRES
Record: 6-4
North Division: 3rd
Grade: B+
The Molosses may be the most dependable team in French football.
They rarely dominate headlines. They rarely generate dramatic storylines. They simply win enough games every year to remain relevant.
Their 6-4 record reflected a team that knew exactly who it was. Physical. Organized. Difficult to beat.
The Molosses once again demonstrated that they belong among the country's strongest organizations and, importantly, secured their place in Ligue Élite.
The next challenge is obvious.
Asnières has spent years proving it belongs among the contenders.
Now it must prove it can become a champion.
The gap between those two levels remains frustratingly small.
Teacher's Comment: Always delivers quality work. Waiting for the breakthrough project.
MÉTÉORES DE FONTENAY-SOUS-BOIS
Record: 5-4-1
North Division: 4th
Grade: A-
No team exceeded expectations more dramatically.
The Météores entered the season with many observers expecting a difficult adjustment period. Instead, they finished above .500, played meaningful football throughout the season, and frequently looked more comfortable than established D1 programs.
A 5-4-1 record does not fully capture their impact.
Fontenay brought energy, confidence, and competitiveness from Week 1. Rather than fighting for survival, they spent much of the year proving they belonged.
Which is why their story ends on a bittersweet note.
Despite outperforming several clubs selected for Ligue Élite, the Météores will not participate in the new competition next season.
Few teams accomplished more relative to expectations.
Few teams received less reward.
Their exclusion will remain one of the most debated consequences of the reform.
Teacher's Comment: Passed every test. Didn't get invited to graduation.
BLUE STARS MARSEILLE
Record: 6-4
South Division: 2nd
Grade: B+
The Blue Stars spent much of the season caught between success and frustration.
On one hand, a 6-4 record is objectively strong. Marseille once again established itself as one of the best teams in the South and remained competitive against quality opposition.
On the other hand, the gap between good and great remained visible.
The Blue Stars never quite looked capable of matching Cannes' dominance or fully challenging Thonon's status as national favorite. Their experience and talent carried them through difficult moments, but the season lacked the statement victories that define championship campaigns.
Still, Marseille enters Ligue Élite as one of the competition's most recognizable brands.
The foundation remains strong.
The expectations remain even stronger.
Teacher's Comment: Good report card. Parents expected honors.
GRIZZLYS CATALANS
Record: 5-5
South Division: 3rd
Grade: B
The Grizzlys delivered exactly what a .500 record suggests.
Nothing spectacular.
Nothing disastrous.
Just solid football.
Catalans spent the season proving they could compete with virtually everyone while simultaneously struggling to establish themselves among the league's elite. Their consistency kept them relevant, and their resilience helped them avoid the pitfalls that trapped several other clubs.
Most importantly, the Grizzlys secured a place in Ligue Élite.
In a season where uncertainty surrounded so many organizations, that achievement matters.
The challenge now is transforming stability into ambition.
Teacher's Comment: Not flashy. Not reckless. Dependably average in the best possible way.
ARGONAUTES D'AIX-EN-PROVENCE
Record: 4-5-1
South Division: 4th
Grade: C+
The Argonautes spent 2026 walking a tightrope.
Every victory felt important. Every defeat felt dangerous.
Their 4-5-1 record reflects a team that remained competitive without ever truly finding consistency. At their best, the Argos looked capable of upsetting stronger opponents. At their worst, they looked like a team still searching for its identity.
The positive news is that Aix-en-Provence secured its place in Ligue Élite.
The less positive news is that nobody will confuse this season with one of the great campaigns in club history.
Survival and qualification were achieved.
The next step is becoming relevant in championship conversations again.
Teacher's Comment: The final grade is acceptable. The potential is much higher.
OURS DE TOULOUSE
Record: 4-6
South Division: 5th
Grade: C
The Ours may have produced one of the most interesting contradictions of the season.
A losing record usually creates concerns about the future.
Instead, Toulouse enters 2027 with a place in Ligue Élite already secured.
While several teams with stronger records will watch from the outside, the Ours will participate in French football's new era. That reality alone changes how their season should be viewed.
The on-field results were inconsistent. A 4-6 finish left little margin for optimism from a purely sporting perspective.
But the organization achieved its most important long-term objective.
Now comes the difficult part.
Proving they belong.
Teacher's Comment: Got into the university. Still needs to improve the grades.
LÉOPARDS DE ROUEN
Record: 1-8-1
North Division: 5th
Grade: D
The standings were brutal.
One win. One tie. Eight defeats.
There is no elegant way to describe a season like that.
Yet Rouen enters the future from a surprisingly strong position. Despite the disappointing record, the Léopards secured one of the coveted Ligue Élite spots and now have the opportunity to rebuild while remaining among the country's top clubs.
That creates a fascinating challenge.
The results clearly indicated a team with significant work ahead.
The status of the organization suggests confidence in its long-term potential.
2026 was difficult.
2027 becomes critical.
Teacher's Comment: The transcript is concerning. The scholarship remains active.
DIABLES ROUGES DE VILLEPINTE
Record: 0-9-1
North Division: 6th
Grade: F
The Diables Rouges never stopped competing.
Unfortunately, the standings never rewarded those efforts.
An 0-9-1 season is difficult to defend from any perspective. Villepinte struggled to generate momentum, struggled to close games, and ultimately struggled to find victories.
The arrival of Ligue Élite only amplified the pressure.
When the final decisions were made, the Diables found themselves outside the new competition and facing an uncertain future.
The rebuilding process begins immediately.
There is no other choice.
Teacher's Comment: The semester ended before the comeback story arrived.
CENTAURES DE GRENOBLE
Record: 0-9-1
South Division: 6th
Grade: F
Grenoble's season mirrored Villepinte's in many ways.
One tie. No wins. Plenty of difficult afternoons.
The Centaures fought hard, remained committed, and never stopped showing up. Unfortunately, effort and results rarely aligned.
Every week served as another reminder of the challenge of competing at the highest level of French football.
Like Cannes and Fontenay, Grenoble will not participate in Ligue Élite, although for very different reasons.
The objective now is straightforward.
Learn from 2026 and begin building toward a return.
Teacher's Comment: Attendance was excellent. The scoreboard remained unimpressed.

The final D1 Elite season will be remembered for two stories.
The first was Thonon's continued dominance.
The second was the arrival of Ligue Élite.
Cannes went undefeated and won't be there. Fontenay exceeded every expectation and won't be there. Rouen won one game and will be there. Toulouse finished below .500 and will be there.
Agree with those decisions or not, they shaped the narrative of 2026 just as much as anything that happened on the field.
One era has ended.
Another begins now.
