1st. UNSW Raiders
Reigning champions, reigning expectations. The Raiders enter the 2025 season with a target on their backs after their offensive shootout win in last yearâs Waratah Bowl (70â42 vs. UTS). Quarterback play, discipline, and a fierce defensive front make them early favorites again. No team returns more chemistry or more firepower. Expect them to come out of the gate as the team to beat.
2nd. UTS Gators
The Gators have unfinished business. Losing in the championship game in a high-scoring affair still stings, but Head Coach Matt Schwartz has a revamped secondary and a chip on his shoulder. The offense remains elite, and if their defense improves even marginally, they could flip the script in 2025. No one wants to face the Gators early.
3rd. Northern Sydney Rebels
One of the most disciplined and defensively sound teams in the league, the Rebels are quietly building momentum heading into the new season. They might not draw the headlines like the Raiders or Gators, but donât be surprised if they upset a title favorite early. Watch for their front seven to be a nightmare for opposing QBs.
4th. Sydney Uni Lions
The most decorated club in Gridiron NSWÂ history enters 2025 in a bit of a transitional phase. The Lions have won 22 titles but recent years havenât lived up to that legacy. Rumors of a younger roster and fresh schemes have given fans hope. Expect improvement as the season develops, especially if their offensive unit gels quickly.
5th. Wollongong Mustangs
The Mustangs may be the most unpredictable team heading into this season. Theyâve shown flashes in recent years â tough, gritty football, and occasionally frustrating breakdowns. With a new OC reportedly overhauling their passing attack, 2025 could be the start of a new era for the Mustangs. Could be a dark horse for the playoffs.
6th. Nepean Ducks
After a winless campaign in 2024, the Ducks are starting from the ground up. Thereâs optimism out west though, with fresh recruiting and young local talent stepping up. Theyâre aiming for more than moral victories. Donât expect a playoff run, but expect them to make life hard for at least one contender this season.
đ Season Outlook
With kickoff set for September 13th, 2025, all six teams are locked in for what could be one of the most competitive Gridiron NSWÂ seasons in recent memory. The top contenders remain strong, but key offseason changes leave the door open for a shake-up.Â
Weâll be following the storylines, surprises, and breakout players as the road to the Waratah Bowl begins. You can also follow along @americanfootballnsw.
