CNFA 2025: Rebels Eye 6th Straight Crown as Hungry Monsters Roar into RoBowl XV

Updated: Jun 21

It’s that time of year again! The pads thump louder, the stakes are higher, and the RoBowl stage is set. On Sunday, Bucharest will host RoBowl XV, a showdown between two clubs who know each other all too well: the undefeated Bucharest Rebels, seeking their sixth straight national title, and the ever-ambitious Mureș Monsters who are still chasing that elusive first.

On paper, history leans orange and black. The Rebels are 11-0 all-time against Mureș, including two RoBowl victories in 2021 and 2022. But this isn’t just another title defense. The Monsters arrive in Bucharest with a new coach, a revitalized identity, and a roster brimming with belief.

The Dynasty: Rebels Reload, Not Rebuild

"Business as usual," says club president and wide receiver Alexandru Irimia, when asked about preparing for a sixth consecutive final. This year, however, the Rebels dynasty has taken a different form. With a squad filled with rookies, the team blended fresh blood into a winning culture. The result? A perfect 6-0 regular season, outscoring opponents 272-44.

Elijah Aikens, one of the league’s most electric two-way threats, summed up the team’s approach in one word: execution. "We know every play won’t be perfect," Aikens says, "but we believe in each other. When it’s time, we execute."

Defensive captain Begad Gamaleldin echoed that sentiment. "We kept the Monsters from scoring a single point in our first matchup. That’s the plan again."

Still, even the Rebels acknowledge the challenge ahead. "They’re a good team," Irimia says of the Monsters. "They’ve grown. It will come down to who executes better and makes fewer mistakes."

The Contenders: Monsters, Reforged and Relentless

After a few years of falling short, the Mures Monsters look like a team reborn. Under first-time head coach Nick Davis, they’ve forged an identity that balances grit and unity with strategic execution.

"I wanted to set a standard," Davis says. "This season has been huge for building a quality football culture. We’re a well-trained warrior brotherhood battalion fighting for football supremacy."

Led by homegrown quarterback Hunor Szölösi, the Monsters finished the regular season 4-2 and crushed the Timișoara 89ers in the semifinals. Szölösi, who accounted for 14 points himself this year, isn’t just trying to win—he’s out to prove something. "I want to show everyone you don’t need an import quarterback to win a championship," he says.

One of his favorite targets? Tight end DJ Ruff, who is among the team leaders with 32 points despite missing two games. "Rent is due, and I’m coming to collect," Ruff says. "The third time’s the charm, and I’m ready to help bring the first RoBowl to Mureș."

The Monsters’ defense, anchored by Keanu Thames and Levente Lakó, has also been elite down the stretch. Thames, who scored 20 points on both sides of the ball, put it plainly: "We’ve made our preparations all year. Trust yourself and remember all the work you put in."

A Rivalry Written in Orange

So far the Rebels and Monsters have clashed 11 times. The Rebels have won 11 times. The numbers are brutal:

  • Points For: Rebels 480, Monsters 156

  • RoBowls: Rebels 2, Monsters 0

  • Net Points: +324 in Bucharest’s favor

Numbers don’t play games, though. Players do. And the most recent encounter told a different story.

After a blowout in their first 2025 matchup, the Monsters came back swinging in game 2, cutting the Rebels' lead to single digits and nearly staging a comeback. "That second game gave me the experience I needed," says QB Szölösi. "This time, we start how we finished—and finish even stronger."

Spotlight Players to Watch

Quevin Redding leads the Monsters in total points (72), including 3 interception return touchdowns and 8 touchdown scores—a true game-changer on all phases. Rookie WR/CB Zsombor Rigmanyi has impressed on both sides of the ball as well. For Bucharest, expect big plays from homegrown QB Sorin Marin, Sorin Gifei, and the explosive Elijah Aikens, whose versatility could stretch even Mureș’ fast defense.

If there’s one intangible the Monsters have, it’s hunger. "We know we deserve to win this game," says Lakó. "Now it’s just about collecting what’s ours."

Final Thoughts

The Rebels are trying to extend a dynasty. The Monsters are trying to make history. One team knows how to win it. The other is desperate to finally do it.

Coach Nick Davis perhaps said it best: "They aren’t the ‘85 Bears. We will play our game. They will play theirs…and we’ll see who wants it more."

The throne is waiting. Let the battle begin.
