3Peat, Nothing Less - FFFA D1 Championship Review

The D1 Elite season has officially come to an end, wrapping up in spectacular fashion this past weekend with the highly anticipated 29th edition of the Casque de Diamant. This grand finale delivered everything fans could hope for, intensity, drama, and unforgettable plays, all unfolding on a compact 80-yard field that only amplified the action. From start to finish, it was a thrilling showdown that truly lived up to its reputation as the biggest game in French American football.

Iron Mask - Cannes VS Black Panthers - Thonons-les-Bains

Before diving into the key moments of the game, let’s take a closer look at the X-Factors on both sides, the players who shaped their teams’ journeys to the Casque de Diamant:

Iron Mask Cannes

  • RB Yanis Polin – A true offensive weapon, Polin was nothing short of electric this season. Racking up over 1,000 rushing yards and scoring more than 20 touchdowns, he averaged a staggering 7 yards per carry. But his impact didn’t stop there, versatile and reliable, he also contributed as a pass-catcher, proving to be a Swiss army knife in the Iron Mask offense.

  • QB Olivier Roy – In his first season playing in France, Roy made quite an impression. Calm, efficient, and smart with the ball, he completed 60% of his passes for 1,652 yards, throwing 17 touchdowns against just 3 interceptions. A solid presence under center, he helped bring stability and rhythm to the Iron Mask attack.

Thonon Black Panthers

  • ATH Adel Bafdile – Simply unstoppable. Whether it was on offense, special teams, or defense, Bafdile looked like a man among boys all season. His athleticism and game-changing ability made him one of the most feared playmakers in the league.

  • QB José Tabora Jr – Back on the field after recovering from a major injury, Tabora returned with something to prove, and he delivered. With the third-most passing touchdowns in the league, he showed off both his strong arm and his dual-threat ability, extending plays with his legs and making life difficult for any defense in his way.

The opening offensive drive belonged to Iron Mask Cannes, but right from the first snap, it was clear that the Black Panthers' defense had come to make a statement. Locked in and relentless, Thonon’s defensive unit left no room for error, disrupting plays and denying any chance for the Iron Mask to find their footing. The absence of key wide receiver Labarrière due to injury was immediately felt, as Cannes struggled to establish any rhythm or momentum on offense and overused RB Yanis Polin.

Then came Thonon's turn to take the field, and they wasted no time. On their very first offensive possession, the Black Panthers struck with authority. Quarterback José Tabora Jr, well protected by his solid offensive line, connected with his go-to weapon, Adel Bafdile, who found a seam in the defense. The result: an early touchdown that set the tone and launched the hostilities with style.

Cannes tried to respond quickly on the following drive to avoid an early collapse, but... once again, Adel Bafdile made his presence felt, this time on defense. With a crushing, high-impact tackle, he set the tone for a Black Panthers unit that was locked in on every snap. The pressure didn’t stop there: Thonon’s defense swarmed the field, and even the special teams stepped up with a big play, shutting down a Cannes punt attempt and keeping the momentum firmly on their side.

While the first quarter was clearly dominated by the Black Panthers, the early moments of the second gave a brief glimmer of hope. The Iron Mask defense managed to contain Thonon’s offense, hinting at a possible shift in energy. But that hope was short-lived. The tide turned again, and fast. Cannes simply looked unprepared for the intensity of the occasion. Despite the hard work in training, once the game began, they didn’t look like a united team. Instead, they appeared as individuals trying to make plays on their own, lacking the cohesion and chemistry needed on such a big stage. Honestly, Cannes could consider themselves lucky to head into halftime trailing by “only” 24–6. Given the pace and dominance displayed by the Black Panthers, the score could have been much more lopsided.

The second half only confirmed the trajectory of the game. As minutes ticked by, the cracks in Cannes’ structure became more visible. Miscommunications, missed assignments, and a lack of cohesion haunted their efforts, while on the other side, the Black Panthers executed with precision and purpose. Thonon never found themselves in a position of weakness, not for a single moment. They were composed, efficient, and in total control, mirroring the dominance they had displayed throughout the entire season.

What made their performance even more impressive was the context. This was their 20th game of the year, a long and grueling campaign that would wear down any team. Yet, they showed up for the biggest stage with fresh legs and sharp minds. The chemistry was there. The intensity never dipped. Delivering such a high level of football at this point in the season was nothing short of a masterclass, a testament to the coaching staff, the preparation, and the players' mindset.

And yet, despite the scoreboard and the outcome, Iron Mask Cannes deserves nothing but praise. No, it wasn’t their night. No, they didn’t lift the trophy. But what they accomplished this season cannot be overshadowed by a single game. This was their first-ever appearance in a Casque de Diamant final, a historic achievement for the club. Week after week, game after game, they built momentum, earned respect, and wrote one of the most exciting stories of the year in French football.

They may have fallen short of the ultimate goal, but they’ve proven they belong at the top. The foundation is there. The experience is invaluable. And if they can build on what they created this season, there’s every reason to believe Cannes will be a serious contender again next year.

So yes, hats off to both teams. To the Black Panthers, for another brilliant chapter in their dynasty. And to the Iron Mask, for showing that greatness can emerge from hunger, belief, and the courage to dream big.
