Marian Menden: A Receiver's Rise in European Football - Perfect Pervis Meet Marian Menden, a rising star in German football, now showcasing his talent as a receiver for the Cannes Iron Mask in France's Division 1 Elite. With a strong background in Germany's top league and a basketball pedigree, Menden brings a unique blend of skill and athleticism to the field. In this interview, he shares his inspiring journey and aspirations for the future. HUMBLE BEGINNINGS I started playing as a Running Back in the U16 and had a great first year. I took part in a tryout for the all state team (Saarland/Rheinland Pfalz) and got selected to play as a receiver. Moving to U19, I ultimately moved to receiver and had a breakout year right away with 10+ touchdowns in 8 games. Unfortunately, we missed the playoffs that year. The following season, I once again scored 10+ touchdown season, and we made the playoffs, ultimately losing to the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns. My last U19 year was affected by Covid and we didn’t really have a season. After the U19 I moved up to the GFL Team. Around that time I also quit playing basketball, because I wanted to focus 100% on American Football. The competition at receiver was hard and I was limited to a handful of snaps a game, which I tried to make the most of. BECOMING A TALENT I felt like I could show a lot more than I was doing in practice and I struggled with self confidence, but I kept waiting for a chance to prove myself. I got my shot in the quarter finals against the Cologne Crocodiles. After the half I got subbed in and went for 3 receptions for 72 yards and the touchdown in one drive. The next year I got my shot at the starting job. I finished the year with 25 catches for 440 yards and 6 touchdowns. My best season was in 2023, with 50 receptions for 840 yards and 8 touchdowns. After the 2023 season my friend and I were contacted by the Cannes Iron Mask. The decision was a no-brainer, because it has always been a dream of mine to be a European import. I was extremely lucky through my years of football in terms of staying healthy, with most of my adversity being getting that GFL starting job. I feel like I still have to prove myself. Now in a different country, I feel like this year is very important for my development and my future in football. MARIAN MENDEN ON THE FIELD I would describe myself as a physical receiver with great route running and secure hands. I can make those contested catches, and I’m a big target for my quarterback. In terms of impact on the sport, I am always trying to give my knowledge to anyone that has open ears for it, may it be my teammates or youth players. Most of my experience was learned from more experienced players, and I think if you stay critical with yourself and you're hungry to learn you're gonna succeed. CURRENT ROLE & WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS Of course when teams bring you in as an import you are expected to make the team better in every facet. My role is of course being a starting receiver and playmaker, but in fact at the end of the day I’m only one of possibly four receivers on the field so all of the guys need to be on the same page. We have a great group of guys with so much talent and I’m trying to make the guys around me better. My goals and plans in the future are probably going back to my hometown GFL team, and putting myself on the map for European football. Like is said I feel like I’m far from perfect, but the main goal is to always make progress and not be satisfied. But right now it’s all about the Iron mask and having the best season possible. LEGACY IN THE MAKING I feel like there still is a lot of legacy to be built, and a lot to be achieved. I want to make the most out of my football career and I’m excited for what’s coming. Everything I’ve done until now has led up to where I’m at right now. So I’m convinced that where you picture yourself in the future has a big impact on where you’re gonna end up, if you keep on working.

Currently showcasing his skills as a Receiver/Tight End for the Thonon Black Panthers in the French Elite Division 1, Turnbull brings with him a remarkable journey from his days as a standout player at Arizona Christian University. Leadership and Winning “My senior year of college at ACU I was able to be a part of a conference championship team and I remember we were playing SAGU for the championship, the game came down to one drive to get into field goal range and we had to rally as a team and as individuals to get ourselves into field goal range. I happened to catch the ball that put us in range of the game winning field goal and helped us secure the game. I think that speaks to my leadership and will to win which are two huge attributes I possess as a player.” Early Life and Entry into Football Where did you grow up, and how has your hometown influenced your football journey? I was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma but moved to Houston, Texas when I was 10 years old. In Texas the only thing bigger than football is Jesus. So early on football became a priority in my life. There are so many people that played roles in my football journey, but the 2 biggest were my grandfather who played linebacker at LSU, and my stepfather who played Defensive Back in the NFL for 6 seasons. They showed me early in life what it means to be a great football player and a great man. Can you walk us through your football journey, from your early days to where you are now? I began playing tackle football when I was 9 years old. I played quarterback all growing up until middle school, where I played linebacker and tight end. In high school I was placed on varsity my sophomore year and started the entire season at tight end, from there I moved to receiver my junior and senior season. Out of high school I took an athletic scholarship to the University of Northern Colorado. After a season at UNC, I transferred to the University of Houston where I spent 2 seasons as a cougar before transferring to Arizona Christian University. Football Pre-France What are some of the proudest achievements in your football career? My biggest achievement so far is the conference championship me and my team won in 2021. As an individual, some cool achievements for me include, 2-time first team all Sooner athletic conference. And All-American Honorable mention my senior season. I finished my career at ACU with 960 yards receiving on 74 catches including 7 touchdowns. Facing Adversity Are there any challenges you've faced that have significantly shaped your journey? In 2022 I was a part of the XFL circuit and was set to be drafted to the XFL but ended up not being drafted, I had to spend an entire year just training and trusting God to bring about an opportunity. That year not only defined me as a player but as a man and I think that’s the most significant challenge I faced in my journey so far. Odell the Player How would you describe your playing style and the skills that set you apart on the field? I play the game in an old school style when it comes to physicality. I love to hit and make physical plays. But I also use finesse  when I run routes and catch the football. Beyond Football What are some of your interests or passions? I love the game of football and when I’m not playing I am a teacher for Conroe ISD in Texas,  I coach youth football, and train young athletes. Current Role and Future Outlook What is your current role within your team, and how do you see it evolving? I like to think of myself as the Swiss Army knife for coach Legault. Whatever coach asks me to do I get it done. Whether that be in the pass game or blocking in the run game Looking ahead, what are your aspirations and what goals do you hope to achieve in your future football endeavors? I like to think present, I think our biggest goal is to be 1-0 each week and perform to the best of my abilities not just in games but in practice and meetings as well. In what ways do you believe you've made an impact on the sport of football or inspired others? I coach a youth football team in Houston that includes my younger brother and I believe the knowledge and wisdom I have of the game of football helps them to understand and enjoy the game. Self-Reflection How would you summarize your legacy and the mark you've left in football? I know that there is much more to be written in the legacy and mark I will leave in this game, but for now I know my legacy is defined by my love of the game and my willingness to never give up. Is there a particular quote or message you'd like to leave with our readers that encapsulates your journey and philosophy? The biggest reason I am where I am is because of my faith in Jesus Christ and the love and support provided by my family. Without those two things I would not be where I am today. And a quote that encapsulates me as a man and a football player is one said to me many times by my late grandfather, Lindley King “when the going gets tough, the tough get going.”

While the Crusaders appear heavy favorites, the Navigators' potential for an upset adds intrigue to the encounter. Crusaders Aim for Dominant Start The Crusaders enter the game riding high after a convincing Week 2 victory against the Maia Mutts. Their offense is firing on all cylinders, and a strong offensive line promises to control the tempo. While their defense has shown promise, room for improvement exists. Given last season's success against the Navigators, the Crusaders appear poised for another win. Navigators Look to Spring a Surprise The Navigators, on the other hand, remain an enigma. Being their season opener, their true capabilities are unknown. Establishing a consistent defensive effort will be crucial to their success. Ahead of the upcoming season starting on March 9th, İlter Havuçgil, General Manager of the Turkish National Team and longtime Head Coach of Gazi Warriors, provides insights. Enjoy the read! Koç Rams (#1 in Regular Season, Defending Champions) Let's start with last year's champion, Koç Rams. How are things looking for Koç Rams before the season? Koç Rams were last year's champions. We could visibly see some issues in their passing offense last year. There is a quarterback change this year. If they don't make a new transfer, Burakhan Bahar seems to be the starting Quarterback.Their running plays and execution by the offensive line are very good. They demonstrated this last year. The Rams play simple, trying to execute the fundamentals of American Football. They're not a team that experiments with very different plays. Their motto is already "Good rushing offense, good defense." They already have our National Team's Head Coach Batur Kaplan, and this year, our National Team's Offensive Coordinator Mert Pala will also serve as the Quarterback Coach, and our national team's offensive line coach Emir Can Kefeli is also there. Therefore, their organization is very strong; they're already a former ELF team. They're one of the biggest contenders this year. KEYS TO SUCCESS What should Koç Rams focus on to succeed this year? I know they lost a lot of defensive players from their box this year. They are a team that likes to play 4-2 or 3-3, 3-4. Almost 4-5 players have left the team. How they will adapt to this situation is a bit of a question mark. But they have a culture of developing players, especially from different University League teams. So, I think they will adapt. KEY PLAYERS Who are the key players that will contribute the most to Koç Rams' performance this year? This year's key player will be Running back Aytaç Mercan again, one of the best ball carriers in the league. Also, Atilla Işık, ELF's 2022 Defensive Rookie of the Year, will probably play as a receiver this year, and he's said to be in great shape. HOT PROSPECT Is there a young talent you expect to break out this year? Their wide receiver Bartu Memiş. Istanbul Bisons (#3 in Regular Season, Runner Up) Let's continue with last year's finalist, Istanbul Bisons. How are things going for the organization as they enter their second year? Bisons joined last year as a new organization. Unlike other teams in the league, they aren’t a university-based team; they formed an organization by veteran players from Sakarya which moved to İstanbul. Their organizational structure is relatively new, and we noticed a few shortcomings last year. However, they have very experienced players, especially on the defensive side. I can say that they make up a significant portion of our national team defense. They stood out as the least conceding defense last year. They also underwent a quarterback change last season. These changes seem to have worked. They also added Ozan Özcan, one of the most experienced players in the league, to their receiver corps. Their quarterback, Tolga Törün, played very well in the final last season and he seems ready to explode this year too. In my opinion, the area they need to improve on is that they can still panic a lot during games, they haven't established a winning culture. Although they made it to the final, that's what I saw. Apart from that, sometimes a lack of concentration stands out. Other than that, there aren't many big problems. What surprised me last year was that their offense showed up to be at a close level to their defense. I didn't expect that. KEYS TO SUCCESS What should Bisons focus on to succeed this year? Are they really a winning team, or was it just a one-year success? They need to prove this mentally. Things didn't go bad last year, but how the team reacts when things go bad, I think, is an important part. KEY PLAYERS Who are the key players that will play a significant role in Bisons' success this year? I think this year it will be their quarterback, Tolga. Ufuk Eren Özelçe is also an important player; he was one of the best players last year and played a critical role in our victory against Ireland with a critical interception in the national team game. HOT PROSPECT Do you have a young talent you expect to break out this season? I can mention Edham Ashour as a young player to watch. He was quite effective in the pro league last year. As far as I know, he has around 6-7 touchdowns. Boğaziçi Sultans (#2 in Regular Season, Semifinalist) Let's continue with last year's semifinalist, Boğaziçi. How are things looking for Boğaziçi as the new season approaches? Boğaziçi is one of the oldest and most established clubs in the country. It can be said that it is the first club that comes to mind when American Football is mentioned in Türkiye. They have a winning tradition. Especially when they won the championship in 2022. They started the season very poorly, made it to the playoffs with a losing record, and managed to win the championship; they have a philosophy of "It’s not over until Boğaziçi says it's over." They do some things very well, and I think there are things they haven't developed much. They can play very typical vertical passing plays by heart; they have a culture in passing concepts. Furkan Beyaz has been doing a good job in their running attacks for 2 years. I can't give the same praise for their offensive lines. They sometimes have problems, especially with snaps. Their defense also has been one of the most successful defenses in the country for years. They have a very successful Defensive Coordinator. I don’t see big flaws in their defense. KEYS TO SUCCESS What should Boğaziçi focus on to reach their goals this season? Because there are many teams in Istanbul, players can go to different teams. I see a lack of depth in their squad. Therefore, the biggest question is whether they can stay healthy. It's a fact that the team is getting a little older, and some important players were injured last year. KEY PLAYERS Who are the star players that will be influential in Boğaziçi's success? I say wide receiver Adil Güngör. He's the best player in my opinion. I can also say running back Furkan Beyaz, but I'm not sure if he will play for Boğaziçi this year. Lastly, Caner Dündar, the safety who has been playing for them for years. HOT PROSPECT Is there a young talent you expect to break out this season? Fırat Elmas, their cornerback, plays quarterback in the university league. He's a very athletic and talented player. METU Falcons (#4 in Regular Season, Semifinalist) Let's move on to the METU Falcons, where I also play. As one of last year's semifinalists, how are things looking for Falcons before the new season? ODTÜ is the most eagerly anticipated team of the year. Since I am also the Head Coach of Gazi Warriors, we will face them in the first week. They have a long winning streak against us. The most noticeable change in ODTÜ is that they switched from flexbone offense, which they have been playing for a long time, to spread offense. Of course, we watched the University League matches related to this, and they gave good performances, but there were still situations they were not used to. Also there have been times when their defense couldn't reflect the quality of their squad both last year and the previous year. They sometimes gave up unexpected big plays. The biggest difference in their defense this year is that they seem to have adapted a field general. Linebacker Deniz Külbay is a player who can often finish the play all alone on defense this year. I hope we will see him in the national team as well. KEYS TO SUCCESS What should Falcons do this year to progress towards success? They need to maintain their defensive stability and the offensive line's adaptation to spread offense. Especially as we've seen in the university league, they can have a great drive and then have a very unsuccessful drive right after. Here, as a quarterback, you also need to be able to stay mentally correct on the field. KEY PLAYERS Who are the key players expected to contribute significantly to the Falcons' success? Rafet Gökçe and Deniz Külbay. HOT PROSPECT Is there a young talent we should keep an eye on in our team? Mustafa Durmuş, the offensive tackle, who I also closely follow. Physically, he might be the most suitable player for the Offensive Tackle position in Türkiye. Izmir Halcyons (#5 in Regular Season) Finishing 5th last year and just coming up short for the playoffs, let's talk about Izmir Halcyons. With the season approaching, how are things in Izmir? As Izmir's only team, it can be said that it is the largest organization established in Izmir for many years. It's a 2-year-old organization; they won the championship in the 2nd League previous year and were promoted to the 1st League, narrowly missing the playoffs last season. Our national team's Defensive Coordinator Taner Ongun is also in İzmir. They had a tough, aggressive, and good defense last year. As if this wasn't enough, they also added one of the national team starters, Ahmet Cem Uğur from Koç Rams, to their defensive box. Therefore, they have 5 people in their 7-person fronts who have national team experience. It looks scary. But as far as I understand, their offense seems to be more problematic than last year. Their offensive coordinator Mert Aylin also left. KEYS TO SUCCESS What should Halcyons do to be successful this year? How much their offense can keep up with their defense is a bit critical. I can say that they are the team with the biggest difference between offense and defense among the teams in the league. KEY PLAYERS Who are the key players expected to stand out in Izmir this year? Defensive End Mikail Tatlı and Linebacker Ahmet Cem Uğur, who will play for the team for the first time this year. HOT PROSPECT Is there a young talent you think should be watched in Izmir? Linebacker Tarık Alper Görür comes to mind, but I'm not sure about his age. If there are other players, let’s apologize to them. ITÜ Hornets (#6 in Regular Season) Let's talk about ITÜ Hornets, who finished last season in 6th place. How are things going for ITÜ? ITÜ is one of the most interesting teams in the country. They have never played in a final in the professional league. But they always maintain a certain standard. Although they may have the best squad every year, they face problems statistically. I know they have very good players again this year. I know Yiğit Timer, one of the talented quarterbacks in the country, will play for ITÜ this year. They have good players coming from different college teams. But as far as I know, there are shortcomings in the offensive line. Two of our national team players won't play for them. Also, I think their defense performed very poorly last year, they were not solid at all. KEYS TO SUCCESS What would make ITÜ successful this year? Covering their deficiencies in the offensive line. Also, showing determination defensively. KEY PLAYERS Who are the star players that are likely to contribute the most to ITÜ's success? I think their best two players are the twins, running back Türker Alan, and safety Ertürk Alan. HOT PROSPECT Do you see any young talent from the team this year? Linebacker Doruk Yetim, I don't know his age, but he caught my eye recently. He performed well last season. Gazi Warriors (#7 in Regular Season) Finishing last season in 7th place and remaining in the league, let's talk about Gazi Warriors on your side. Are things going well for you before the season? Gazi Warriors, where I am the Head Coach, is one of Türkiye’s oldest and most established teams. It's a team in the process of rebuilding. After the dominant years of the past, we have been playing with younger squads for the last 4-5 years. We have a culture, especially in terms of defense. We are seen as one of the best defenses in the university league too. Ensar Korkut's long-term injury hurt our offense last season, resulting in minimal scoring and only one win. However, his return, along with experienced receivers joining and Emre Özdemir's presence as a running back, boosts our offensive hopes this year. Defensively, a young defensive back squad with the support of National Team Defensive Backs Coach Ermir Gjoka, shows promise. While our winning culture was fading, finishing as group leader in the university league indicates our competitiveness. KEYS TO SUCCESS What should you do this year to take critical steps towards success? Our defense needs to absorb Emre's playing in offense. We also need to show determination in offense and the good players should be able to adapt to each other. KEY PLAYERS Who are the key players expected to contribute significantly to your team's success this year? Running back/Safety Emre Özdemir and Defensive Tackle Cem Yöndem. HOT PROSPECT Do you have a young talent to watch out for in your team this year? Wide Receiver Tuğra Akkaş. IÜ Bulls (Division 2 Champions, Promoted to Division 1) Finally, let's talk about IÜ Bulls, the champion of the 2nd League last year. Also known as Istanbulls, are they ready for their first season in the 1st League? Istanbulls were promoted to the league as the champion of the 2nd League last year, and also won the championship in the university league last year. They have a very interesting structure; they gather players from many parts of Anatolia who have settled in Istanbul. And they really seem to have been able to turn these players into a team. And they haven't lost for a long time. Perhaps playing in the lower league may have an effect, but Taha Çokadar, Türkiye’s starter running back, is already a symbol there. Just his presence puts the team in a competitive position. Their offensive line rotations also seem good to me. In defense, Salih may not play this year due to injury, but Salih Özdemir and Onur Duzcu are two linebackers from our national team. Salih is one of the players the coach lost from the box. But among skill players, there are a few names other than Taha that stand out, but who will be their quarterback and how well they will adapt to the 1st league, these are a bit of a question mark. I also don't know about the state of their defensive back units. Keys To Success What should the Istanbul Bulls do to be successful this year? The adaptation of defensive backs to the league and the establishing a balance between running game and passing game offensively. Key Players Who are the key players expected to carry the torch this year for the İstanbul Bulls? Taha Çokadar and Onur Duzcu. Hot Prospect Will there be new stars in the league from the new team? Do you expect a young talent to emerge this year? Baki Serin, their safety, was one of my favorite players last year. At its core, American Football is very simple: score more points than your opponent! As simple as it is, there is a level of nuance to the sport, making it much more complicated to the average observer. One component of confusion is the defensive aspect of American Football. For most people “to defend” is a common practice in competitive sports, but in American Football it is often confused with “kill the opponent”. We’re going to dive into the aspect of American Football that makes the game more complicated than simple. What is Defense? In football, there are two primary units on the field at the same time, one of which is the defense. The purpose of the defense is to stop the opposing team’s offensive unit from scoring points, or at least limit the amount of points allowed. The defense fulfills its purpose through various strategies, schemes, formation, and individual players all working together for a common goal: Stop the offense. Positions on the Defense Defensive Linemen (DL): These players represent the first line of defense, and are positioned along the line of scrimmage. Physically, these players are the largest of the defensive unit. General position names include defensive tackle & defensive ends, depending on the team’s specific formation. Defensive line attempts to disrupt the offensive play by pressuring quarterbacks, stopping run plays, or attracting enough attention for their teammates to become successful disruptors. Linebackers (LB): Playing on the second line of defense, linebackers are positioned behind the defensive line, usually at a distance of 3-5 yards from the line of scrimmage. The most versatile players on the field, linebackers are usually big enough to stop run plays and pressure the quarterback, yet agile enough to cover receivers if needed. Depending on the defensive formation, linebackers are usually divided into inside linebackers and outside linebackers. Tasked with reacting to the offense, linebackers are responsible for shedding blocks, making tackles, and anything else that is needed to stop the opposing offense. Defensive Backs (DB): This is the last line of defense, and players are positioned 7-12 yards from the line of scrimmage, in various locations on the field. Defensive Backs are the smaller players of the defensive unit, needing to be fast & athletic to defend their offensive counterparts (Wide Receivers). Divided into the cornerback & safety positions, these players are responsible for stopping the offensive passing attack, providing help against the run game, as well as preventing big plays (last line of defense, literally). The Importance of Defense Defense is what makes American Football great. This unit has the ability to influence game outcomes, and is oftentimes used as the catalyst for why a team wins or loses. Here's why defense is so important to the game of American Football. Limiting Scoring Opportunities: The defensive unit’s primary focus is to limit their opponent’s ability to reach the end zone. In doing so, the defense affects the opposing team’s potential to score enough points to win. Creating Turnovers: Through interceptions and fumbles, the defense can create additional opportunities for their team’s offensive unit to score points, while simultaneously preventing their opponents from being able to reach the endzone. Turnovers are a win-win for good defenses, Determining Field Position: Good defenses make their opponents work hard to reach the end zone. One way to do so is to consistently stop the opposing offense, or even make them lose yards. Doing so forces the offense to travel a longer distance to be successful, which increases the likelihood that they will not reach the end zone. Aspects of a Good Defense As an important component of the game, there are various aspects of a good defense that most units attempt to exhibit during a game. Tackling: Being able to stop ball carriers from advancing down the field is one of, if not the most important aspect of defense. Using proper techniques, providing effort, and hustling to the ball, are all imperative to successful tackling. Coverage Skills: Defensive backs and linebackers must be able to perform pass coverage. This includes specific concepts like man-to-man coverage, zone coverage, and a combo coverage (a mix of zone and man). In addition to understanding the coverage concepts, defenders also need to be proficient in forcing incompletions, by way of pass break-ups or interceptions. Effective Pass Rush: The defensive line and linebackers (also called the “Front 7”) need to provide pressure on the offense’s quarterback during passing plays. This can be done by implementing various concepts like stunts and blitz packages, combined with effective individual pass rush moves. The Front 7 should be able to disrupt their opponent’s timing, force bad passes, produce sack, and create fumbles or interceptions. Discipline and Communication: A staple of a good defense is discipline in player assignments, and communicating on the field as much as possible. Doing these two things will create success in stopping opposing offenses, mentally. Defensive Formations 4-3 Defense: This defense is the most common in football, providing four defensive linemen and three linebackers (hence the name). Considered a balanced defense, it is very effective against run plays and providing pressure on the quarterback. Having the appropriate players at linebacker and defensive back positions determines how successful this formation is at defending the opponent’s passing attack. 3-4 Defense: Another commonly used formation, this defense utilizes three defensive linemen and four linebackers. This formation is known for its versatility and unpredictability, making it easier for defenses to disguise their blitz packages and coverages. The right personnel makes this formation a great option against both the run and the pass. 4-2-5/Nickel Defense: By replacing the traditional third linebacker with a defensive back, this formation is used to strengthen pass coverage, without sacrificing run support. Some teams call this a “Nickel” defense, as it looks similar to a 4-3 defense on the field, but rules and personnel vary to enhance pass coverage against heavy receiver offensive sets. In today’s modern football, more teams are using this formation & personnel more than a traditional 4-3. 3-3-5/Nickel Defense: This formation is a variation of the 3-4 defense, replacing the fourth linebacker with a defensive back, once again to strengthen pass coverage. Depending on the alignment used by the defense, this formation allows for very untraditional and exotic stunts, blitzes, and pass coverages. Utilizing fast players and good coverage skills, this defense is most effective against a pass heavy, spread formation offense. Dime Defense: The defensive formation is used situationally, employing four defensive linemen, one linebacker, and six defensive backs. Most defenses use this formation and personnel in situations that require the offense to gain a large amount of yards to obtain a first down or score. This defense provides maximum pass coverage against deep passinging concepts. Defensive Schemes & Strategy In addition to formations & player personnel, there are defensive tactics and philosophies designed to stop opposing  teams’ plays and game plan. These schemes & strategies are created to enhance the strength of the defense (personnel & formation), while simultaneously exploiting  any weakness found in the opponent’s offense. Here are some common defensive schemes used regularly in American Football. Man-to-Man Coverage: The terminology is outdated (Person-to-Person doesn’t quite roll off the tongue), but this coverage is the simplest and easiest for most players to understand: Every defender covers a specific offensive player. The goal is to mirror the offensive player’s movements, not allowing them to catch any passes thrown in their direction. Zone Coverage: Defensive players cover specific areas of the field. The goal is to deny offensive players access to areas on the field, disrupting passing lanes, and creating turnover opportunities. Blitz Packages: Blitzes are designed to utilize additional pass rushers to pressure the quarterback. Packages can be simple or very complex, with the same goal of creating mismatches, confusing the offensive linemen, and pressuring the quarterback. Zone Blitz: Combining zone coverage and blitz packages is common practice in higher level football leagues. The scheme is used to confuse quarterbacks by blitzing additional pass rushers and having defensive linemen drop into pass coverage. The confusion usually results in sacks, fumbles, or interceptions. Embracing the Essence of Defense At its core, American Football is very simple: score more points than your opponent! As simple as it is, there is a level of nuance to the sport, making it much more complicated to the average observer. One component of confusion is the defensive aspect of American Football. For most people “to defend” is a common practice in competitive sports, but in American Football it is often confused with “kill the opponent”. We’re going to dive into the aspect of American Football that makes the game more complicated than simple. Understanding defense enhances the American Football experience, whether you are a player, coach, or spectator. The nuances of defense are what makes the game great, and why defensive player prowess, tactical brilliance, and big plays are celebrated. IFL Week 1 Defensive Battle Varese Skorpions, 7 vs Firenze Guelfi, 0 While most games in Week 1 of the Italian Football League had plenty of scoring, the best game of the week was a defensive battle between the Varese Skorpions and Firenze Guelfi. The Skorpions upset the Guelfi team by scoring the lone points of the game early in the third quarter. Both teams exhibited good defense based on their respective schemes and personnel. FIRENZE GUELFI The Guelfi defense ran a very versatile 4-2-5 defense that allowed them to match up well against the Skorpions offense. The defensive line was dominant for most of the game, allowing the unit to create pressure and stop run plays without blitzing too much. But when they did decide to blitz, it was perfectly timed, and made a difference. One aspect of the defense that really stood out was the tackling ability of everyone on the defensive unit. There were very few missed tackles, if any at all. Also, the Guelfi defense had a very good gang tackling philosophy, which included their defensive backs being active in making tackles. Their defensive line was active in the pass rush, and pressured the Skorpions quarterback often. Their linebackers showed athleticism and speed to the ball, rarely allowing extra yards after contact. The defensive backs for Firenze were not tested much throughout the game, and played as additional linebackers mostly. Unfortunately, one coverage mistake would be what cost this defense a shutout performance. Early in the third quarter, Skorpions receiver Martino Piazzi found a hole in their defense and made a 52-yard catch to put his team in scoring position. One play later, Martino Piazzi finished what he started catch a slant a 10-yard slant from Ryan Griffin for a touchdown. Those two plays would be the only blemishes on an otherwise great defensive game from the Firenze Guelfi. Top Defensive Performances Rocco Zucchelli, DB - 5 tkls, 1 ff Diego Rinaldi, LB - 4.5 tkls Giacomo Insom, DL - 4 tkls, 2 tfl, 1 ff Giovanni Scialdone, DL - 3 tkls, 2 tfl VARESE SKORPIONS The Varese defense ran a very unique 4-3 formation that could easily be confused for a 3-4 at different times throughout the game. Having a defensive end stand up most of the game allowed the defense to use zone blitzes effectively against the pass, but also stop the run from the traditional 4-3 look. The weather played a factor in the Skorpions defensive success. A bad pass intercepted by Appuhamilage Kolonna in the first quarter set the tone for their opponents, as they decided to become a run-first offense. That decision was in the Skorpions advantage, as they had no trouble stopping the run game with their large interior defensive lineman, and athletic defensive ends. Their linebackers were hard hitters who seemed to get better as the game wore on and they created more contact with their opponents. The defensive backs did not receive a ton of action, but when tested, they made big plays including 2 interceptions. This group played well as a unit, and did a great job rallying to the ball on every play. The most important aspects of their success was effort & hustle. There was a standout player that must be mentioned by name. Defensive lineman Roberto Antochi  was a constant point of interest in the game, whether he was rushing the quarterback, stopping the run, or even getting into pass coverage. With Antochi making an impact every play, and great team chemistry, the Varese defense was able to shut out one of the best teams in the IFL and position themselves as an Italian Bowl contender. In the exhilarating realm of Spanish National American Football League (LNFA), anticipation mounts as the Badalona Dracs gear up to face off against the Zaragoza Hurricanes in a pivotal Week 7 matchup. With the Dracs soaring at the helm of the Eastern Conference and the Hurricanes poised to upset any adversary, this clash promises high-stakes drama and intense gridiron action. BADALONA DRACS ARE ON CRUISE CONTROL Badalona Dracs are advancing at this point of the Spanish National American Football League (LNFA) at cruising speed. After two years without a title (last season they were even left out of the final), the most successful team in Spain dominates the Eastern Conference, also convincing with a physical and forceful game in which the running game prevails over the passing game, thanks especially its two import stars: the all-purpose player Alpha Jalloh and the Illinois Runningback Ra'von Bonner. The Badaloneses lead their conference alone, and it seems impossible that anyone could take that lead from them at this point. However, their last game left some doubts after L'Hospitalet Pioners came close to surprising the team coached by Román Villamonte thanks to the magnificent performance of the recently incorporated García brothers. HURRICANES CAN SURPRISE ANYONE The Pioners beat Zaragoza Hurricanes on the last game week by a close margin in which the extra-points were decisive, and that proves that the team from Zaragoza, with the Mexican Quarterback Edgar Ulloa at the controls, has a similar level and, therefore, that Hurricanes could be the one who gave the surprise against Badalona Dracs. The Hurricanes have had to deal with the loss of their star Offensive Lineman Gabriel Rodríguez, but it doesn’t seem that the offense has suffered. The Hurricanes' skilled domestic receiving corps opens the range of plays and it is not easy to cover Aaron David, Luis Sánchez, Sergio Montaner or Miguel López. They all know what it's like to score this season. It is in the running game where the Hurricanes seem to be struggling. In their last game against Pioners, there were few snaps with a running play in their playcalling, which allows the defenses to play with relative comfort and the Linebackers to move quickly to their zones, with Edgar Ulloa himself being the one who accumulates the most running yards. On defense, the Hurricanes' secondary unit is relentless. But they will face, in addition to the versatile Alpha Jalloh, the rising star Eric Ladero, one of the biggest promises in national football. The Dracs' latest addition, the Mexican Quarterback Marco Durán, is out due to suspension and it will be their veteran Quarterback Sergio González, who is having an amazing season, who will lead the team in this game. PREDICTIONS Badalona Dracs seem a clear favorite. Not only because of their dominant regular season but also because they defend their fiefdom. But the Hurricanes could well be the strongest rival in their conference, and the team from Zaragoza needs every possible victory to consolidate their place in the playoffs.

Saturday March 9, the LG OLED Las Rozas Black Demons (4-0) will take on the Camioneros de Coslada (3-2) at El Cantizal stadium of Las Rozas, Madrid. This match comes after both teams won their previous games. Las Rozas dominated Gijón Mariners 47-9 two weeks ago (they had a bye last week) and is only one of two unbeaten teams in the league right now with the Badalona Dracs. Camioneros, on their part but last week, won against Gijón as well. That was a thrilling game that Coslada dominated in the first half and the Mariners almost had their comeback in the second half, finishing 31-20 in favor of the Camioneros. A well-oiled Camioneros offense Camioneros are on pace for a good season, only falling against the powerhouses of the Osos and Black Demons in the first round of the season. Coslada’s biggest strength is their offense. A well oiled machine led by their National quarterback Iván López “Terry”, who has 12 passing Touchdowns to his name in 5 games played so far, 4 of them last week (he is also one of the few domestic starting quarterbacks in the league). Additional offensive big names to keep in mind are American Wide Receivers Ethan Fischler and Mason Wilfong, as well as domestic Wide Receiver Iván García Sala. On the other side of the ball of the blue team, players such as domestic defensive backs Juan Antonio Gómez, Pablo Saló, and British Defensive Lineman Michael Kenshiro (Hamburg Sea Devils signee for next season) will take a big load off the Camioneros defense. The Demons lockdown defense The Black Demons are dominating as always the past few years, being the only unbeaten team in the Western Conference. They are an all around team, but this season especially on defense, where they have allowed the fewest points in the league up to this point, only 26 points in four games. This is thanks in part to names such as Defensive Linemen Sebastián Bowen, David Contreras, and Diego Paz, Linebackers Andrei Luca and American Eric Flowers, as well as  defensive backs like Julio Aguado and American Nolan Corpening. They are not short on offense either with players like American quarterback Theo Landers, Runninbacks Daniel Romero and Gonzalo Haro, and also Wide Receivers Jorge García Vargas (injured at the moment), Jorge García Valcárcel, and Álvaro Molano. Game Prediction Even though the Camioneros have pretty good momentum coming into this game and have proved to be able to play at a pretty high level of football this season, the high-powered Black Demons may be too much to handle and they are highly favored to win this game and continue with a perfect record. But you gotta keep in mind that this is football and anything can happen.

The European League of Football went from “this league won’t make it” to now completing three full seasons heading into a fourth. We had a multitude of high-scoring shootouts, nail biters, and even some dog fights. It’s fair to say the ELF has delivered on providing some of the best ball Europe has seen. With that being said everyone loves a good list so let’s reflect and talk about The Top 5 ELF Games All-Time. 5 - The Black and Blue Game (2021) Hamburg Sea Devils, 26 vs Wroclaw Panthers, 23 This is rivalry filled with pure hatred towards one another. At the time Panther Quarterback, Lukas O’Connor threw for 356 passing, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough as Hamburg drove late in the game to hit the game winning Field Goal. On the following drive Evans Yaboah got the game-ending interception, and the Sea Devils stormed the field in Poland picking up a big win against the Panthers. 4 - Old Friends Meet Again (2022) Frankfurt Galaxy, 26 vs Rhein Fire, 29 With all due respect the Fire have dominated the Galaxy since joining the ELF. Coming off the first-ever ELF Championship, the Galaxy hosted an old friend from the NFL Europe days. The Defense for the Fire played a big role being +4 in the turnover battle. Coming down to the end the Fire kicked the game winning field goal with 9 seconds left to seal the victory in week 1, year 2 of the ELF 3 -  The New Kids on the Block (2023) Munich Ravens, 32 vs Stuttgart Surge, 30 Throughout the season the Ravens showed they were a team that can challenge almost anybody all year. Once these two teams met for a second time, the Surge were getting their starting Quarterback, Reilly Hennessy, back from injury and were looking to wrap up the conference for the most part. As the game started to come down to the end, you could see the Surge didn’t have an answer for the Munich run game. Jeffries and Oyewo went for 100 yards a piece and a pair of touchdowns. The Ravens physically outplayed the Surge. The Hennessy to Stewart connections proved strong but a last-minute Field Goal edged the Ravens over the Surge, which is going to lead to an interesting week 1 for the 2024 season. 2 - A tale of two Halves (2022) Vienna Vikings, 27 vs Barcelona Dragons, 20 This game was a battle between two undefeated teams heading into week 6. Vikings got off to a slow start, as the Dragons led 17-8 going into halftime. Zach Edwards and Kyle Sweet connected for 2 touchdowns putting the Vikings in a situation they hadn’t been in all season. When the second half came around, particularly the 4th quarter, the Vikings came alive, scoring 12 unanswered points, and then “the play” happened, Jackson Erdman to Jordan Bouah – 90 yards to the crib, that sealed a Vikings comeback win 27-20. 1 - The ELF Bleeds Purple (2021) Hamburg Sea Devils, 30 vs Frankfurt Galaxy, 32 For the #1 game we go to the very first Championship game in ELF history. A game that had a ton of big plays and momentum swings, and a game that honestly lived up to the expectations. The downfall for Hamburg was that they couldn’t finish drives as they had with a pair of missed Field Goals, including 2 potential game-sealing attempts. On the other hand Jake Sullivan played the game of his life, passing for 324 yards and 5 total touchdowns (4 passing and 1 rushing). The Sea Devils came up short, while the Galaxy capitalized and won the first-ever ELF Championship. There were  many great games and so many more to come. The Lisboa Devils (1-0) look to extend their winning streak to two games as they take on the Lisboa Bulldogs (0-1) this Saturday, March 2nd. Devils Aim for Repeat Performance The Devils enter the game boasting a strong run game, which the Bulldogs struggled to contain in previous meetings. Their well-disciplined play and special teams contributions are expected to be crucial factors in securing victory. Running back Jesuino Furtado will be key to their success, while rookies will have a chance to showcase their talents. A win is anticipated for the Devils. This Sunday, March 3rd, an important match will take place at the Blaise Matuidi Stadium in Asnières between the Molosses d’Asnières and the Leopards de Rouen. The Molosses (0-1) started their season with a defeat but showed a strong performance against the European champion, the Flash (21-14 score), losing only in the last second to a miraculous Hail Mary. On the other hand, the Leopards (1-0) began their season with a victory against the Cougars (12-21 score), a promising start for the newcomers to D1 ELITE. A solid defense at the Molosses The Molosses may regret their missed opportunity, having almost caused an upset and returning home with a loss in La Courneuve. However, this defeat highlighted the talent within the Molosses team. Defensively, the club from 92 demonstrated dominance by causing 4 turnovers, including 2 interceptions and 2 fumbles. In the first half, the intensity of the Molosses, who seemed enraged, allowed them to dominate the Flash and unfold in their offensive plays. The Leopards should be cautious and prepared for the always challenging visit to Asnières, where the atmosphere and intensity will undoubtedly be present. Molosses' offense led by a dual-threat Quarterback The 2k24 version of the Molosses is primarily characterized by an offense enhanced by the arrival of the American import, quarterback Brody Hahn. He skillfully led Asnières' offense with experience and composure, addressing what may have been lacking in previous Molosses seasons. Despite numerous drops by the receivers, Hahn effectively alternated passing plays with 110 yards and 1 touchdown, notably showcasing his rushing game with 101 yards and 1 touchdown in 11 attempts. Hahn is a dual-threat quarterback, excelling in both passing and running. The Leopards must be attentive, controlling the backfield while closing gaps to prevent the Molosses' quarterback from making successful runs. The return to form of Méril Zéro, the Molosses' newly recruited running back from the GFL, is also anticipated after being sidelined due to injuries against the Flash. Promoted Leopards facing their first major challenge The Leopards of Rouen, promoted from the Northern conference and rising from D2 last season, displayed a controlled performance against a strong ELITE team (the Cougars). However, they face their first significant challenge this weekend against the Molosses, who appear stronger than ever with a dominant defense. Led by American quarterback Jaran Roste, the Leopards struggled on offense (only 69 passing yards) and had difficulty finding their rhythm. Their touchdowns were primarily attributed to defense and special teams, scoring one after an interception at the 1-yard line, concluded by Jaran Roste's run, and another following a Cougards' punt error allowing Jaran Roste to score just outside the end zone. The last touchdown was a spectacular kick-off return, with Youness Mouhafid covering over 80 yards. An already important match in a boiling atmosphere The Molosses are accustomed to hosting matches in a vibrant atmosphere. Hostile and noisy, the Blaise Matudi Stadium and its supporters will play a crucial role in this Week 3 match. The Molosses at home will be eager to level their results and reveal the true identity of their revamped team, while the Leopards will strive to continue their momentum and secure a second victory. Questions Will Be Answered Although the Molosses seem to be the favorites, we anticipate a closely contested match where the French championship will continue to showcase its talents. Will the Leopards withstand the pressure from the Molosses' formidable defense? Can their defense control the new Molosses' offense? These questions will be answered this weekend in a match that already seems crucial in the race for the playoffs between two outsider teams in the ELITE championship.

This weekend, as part of Week 3, the match between Saint-Ouen Cougars and La Courneuve Flash will take place at Escutary Stadium in Saint-Ouen l'Aumône. The Flash (2-0) are the clear favorite for this match, having defeated the Molosses and the Black Panthers in two intense games where the Flash demonstrated the extent of their experience and superiority in the ELITE championship. On the other hand, the Cougars (0-1) were rather disappointing in their home defeat against the Leopards (12-21 score). A significant recruitment effort by the Cougars that still needs to find its rhythm The Cougars have significantly strengthened their team this off-season by bringing in numerous experienced recruits. Firstly, they signed quarterback Donovan Isom from the Berlin Thunder (European League of Football), who has experience at Texas Wesleyan University and GFL 1 with the Berlin Rebels. This American import is a major signing for the ELITE championship, having recorded 587 yards and 9 touchdown passes in a few games last season. He seems to be a perfect leader for the Cougars. The second import is Charlie Hockney, the tight end from the University of Portsmouth. Alongside them, the Offensive-Line player from the Berlin Thunder, Cédric Ouattara, will spend the season with the Cougars. They have also signed key players from the Paris Musketeers to strengthen their offense: running back Chris Vumbo, offensive lineman Max Gaye, and the return of the homegrown receiver Jefferson Alexandre. However, this ambitious recruitment did not pay off against the promoted team (Léopards). The Cougars' offense struggled to execute their passing and running game, with only one touchdown pass scored in the fourth quarter. On a positive note, the Cougars' defense responded well, with a forced fumble and an interception converted into a touchdown (pick-six). The Flash are stronger than ever The Flash leads the northern conference with 2 wins and 0 losses. After a challenging opening match against the Molosses, where the European champions miraculously won in the last second with a Hail Mary (21-14 score), the Flash raised the bar against the reigning French champions, the Black Panthers. Despite the absence of Thonon-les-Bains' starting quarterback, José Tabora Jr, the Flash secured a solid away victory (21-7 score). Led by their running back François-Guilhem Pion (40 rushes, 220 yards, 2 Touchdowns), and an ultra-dominant Offensive-Line, the Flash possesses a highly effective running game. In contrast, the Flash's passing game remains inadequate. Quarterback Léo Crémades has thrown 2 interceptions, 2 TDs, and 220 yards in 2 matches, with a completion rate of 42%, relatively low compared to the standards he had set in previous seasons. As usual, La Courneuve's defense is very physical, adapts to different offensive game plans, and dominates its opponents. The Flash are the Favorites, The Cougars Must do Better The Flash is logically the favorite for this Week 3 match, and it's up to the Cougars to show a different face against an opponent far superior to the Leopards. We will see if the Cougars' offense can step up against the best defense in France. They will need a better performance from Donovan Isom, who currently has a 35% completion rate, and a defense that holds up for all four quarters to hope for a result against La Courneuve's formidable Flash. The Flash, on the other hand, aims to continue its momentum and maintain its position at the top of the ELITE championship.

Big Offseason Moves in the Western Conference of the ELF - Part 1 Offseason is well under way after over 600 players have been announced by ELF franchises these last few months. It is time to have a look and see how rosters are shaping up and getting ready for the upcoming season. Let’s start with the Western Conference. RHEIN FIRE DEPARTURES Somehow unexpectedly, the reigning champs have seen the departure of quite a few key players. Joachim Christensen (Center) and Leander Wiegand (Guard) will no longer be part of that dominant Offensive Line that held Jadrian Clark unscratched in most matches last season. The center has taken the decision to retire from football and Wiegand has moved to the Munich Ravens looking for a new role and challenges. The receivers corps have also been affected by departures. The franchise has surprisingly let USA receivers Nathaniel Robitaille and Willie Patterson leave. This has come somehow as a shock as both Americans performed at a high level last season. At least one of them was expected to be extended but it looks like the team had other plans in mind. French star receiver, Anthony Mahoungou, is leaving the team too, and joining the Musketeers ranks. The defensive side of the trenches will have some casualties as well, with the departure of top Edge Rusher Alejandro Fernandez to the Madrid Bravos and the retirement of Eric Adam (Defensive Line). To add salt to the wound, important rotational defensive backs Richard Grooten and Lasse Meyer have decided to leave the team in search of more snaps and prominent roles elsewhere. EXTENSIONS Does all these departures mean that the team is no longer a contender? Not quite, dear reader. The team was so loaded with talent last season plus some new exciting signings will for sure make Rhein Fire the team to beat again next season. Well known top Offensive line players like Holierhoek, Wiens, Breidenbach and Raji are back to protect Quarterback Jadrian Clark again. At Running back, the team has renewed ELF star Glen Toonga and competent back up Sergej Kendus. Harlan Kwofie (Wide Receiver) is also returning. On the defensive side of the ball, we can find quite a few more nice extensions in players like Linebackers Simon, Kensey, and Pinter, USA Defensive Back and ELF star, Omari Williams, Defensive lineman Jason Chikere, Safety Max Richter,  and Cornerbacks Till Janssen and Jannik Seibel. NEW SIGNINGS And what about new signings? Some exciting news here for Fire fans. 29 year old German Edge Rusher Aaron Donkor comes back to Europe after spending two seasons in the NFL Seattle Seahawks practice squad as part of the NFL international IPP program, and a short stint in the XFL. The Defensive Backs corps are being heavily reloaded  with the signings of American Darrius Nash from XFL Las Vegas Vipers and former Frankfurt Galaxy french Safety Tony Anderson. Young and promising German Linebackers Lennart Weitz and Tim Steins are also joining the Fire this year. Weitz comes from the Cologne Centurions and has been selected to be part of the CFL International Draft in 2024. Tim comes back to Europe after his stay at Minot State University in NCAA Division II. FRANKFURT GALAXY DEPARTURES It has been an intriguing offseason in Frankfurt so far, with a mix of difficult management decisions and unexpected departures. No move has a bigger impact on the franchise than the decision of letting Quarterback Jakeb Sullivan go after three seasons with the team. The Legnano team had a very successful season (3-5), winning against the Rhinos, the Skorpions, and the Mastini. They narrowly missed the playoffs due to their quarterback's shoulder injury in a crucial match against Roma Lazio and a forfeit against Bologna, following the rescheduling of a game due to weather conditions. The Frogs are led by the spectacular quarterback Eystin Salum, a dual-threat quarterback with an incredible season last year, accumulating 591 yards and 11 rushing touchdowns and 954 yards and 5 passing touchdowns in 7 games. Salum delighted us last year with his spectacular runs and jumps, unafraid of contact and skillful in alternating between passing and running plays, despite their Offensive Line often being under pressure due to numerous injuries to their starters. For this new season, the Frogs have strengthened their offense, starting with their new American import, Damon Sheehy-Giuseppi, a receiver who played for the Cleveland Browns in the NFL, a crucial addition that, combined with Eystin Salum's game vision, will undoubtedly trouble opposing defenses. In Week 0 of the IFL season, the Torino Giaguari and Milano Rhinos combined for a total of 87 points scored in an overtime Kickoff classic! Let’s take a look at how each offense was able to be so successful. Milano Rhinos Offense The Rhinos offense could be described as a “Pro Style” offense. The team often operated out of the shotgun formation, specifically a variation called “pistol” where the running back is behind the quarterback. This variation allowed the Milano team to execute plays similar to what is seen with a quarterback underneath the center. A few times throughout the game, the team actually put their quarterback under center, specifically when the team wanted to run the ball more successfully. Play selection was an important part of the Rhinos offense success. They utilized a very balanced strategy, alternating between pass plays and run plays the entire game. This strategy resulted in their team sustaining long drives to score most of their points. Milano was more successful in the passing game, but the consistency of running the ball kept their opponents guessing on their play choices. The passing concepts used were standard “Pro Style”, usually requiring receivers to run routes that take a few seconds to develop. The Rhinos quarterback, Hamish McClure, has a good arm, is very athletic, and reads the defense very well. He was able to find open players the entire game, with very few throws missing the mark. When faced with pressure from the opposing defensive line, Hamish McClure showed poise and athleticism to get out of trouble. The skill players for the Rhinos were very inconsistent, making the game much more difficult for themselves. Despite a lot of drop passes and unsuccessful running plays, a few players were able to make timely plays to keep drives going, and score touchdowns when the opportunities arose. Torino Giaguari Offense The Giaguari offense would be considered a “Spread” offense, using multiple Shotgun formations. The team often operated in formations with 3 or more receivers to one side of the field, and utilized player motions to change formations. The most noticeable aspect of the “Spread” offense used by Giaguari was the use of the entire football, sideline to sideline, for their formations. This tactic allowed the Torino team to isolate defenders of the Rhinos defense, which really proved to be the difference in the game. Torino utilized the speed and athleticism of their skill players by selecting plays that required quarterback Nicholas Dalmasso to throw the ball very quickly after the ball was snapped to him. Whether the pass was short or long, it came out of his hands quickly. When plays did not go according to plan, Nicholas Dalmasso would use his legs to extend plays and make magic happen, oftentimes resulting in a big play. The Giaguari did not have a lot of long drives, because they had big plays all game. Tight End/ Wide Receiver Adrian Tolbert was a man amongst boys all game, being able to catch anything thrown his way, as well as getting a ton of yards after catch. But he wasn’t the only dominating force as his counterpart, receiver Andrea Serra, was also unstoppable in this game and made lots of big plays. Combined with more big plays from receiver Lorenzo Bassi and running back Tommaso Tenconi, the Giaguari offense was a high-powered, dominating force throughout the entire game.
