Playoff Picture Begins to Take Shape
As the Portuguese American Football League approaches the final stretch of the regular season, every result begins to carry heavier weight in the playoff race. Weeks 7 and 8 provided a clearer picture of where each team stands — with some solidifying their position among the contenders while others now appear to be playing primarily for development heading into next season.
With the Lisboa Devils on a bye week, three matchups highlighted the weekend and helped shape the league’s playoff outlook.
Braga Warriors 19 – 0 Salgueiros Renegades
The Braga Warriors finally delivered a more convincing performance, shutting out the Salgueiros Renegades 19–0.
While the result itself may appear comfortable, the Warriors still showed areas that require improvement if they want to remain in the playoff conversation. Nevertheless, this was a much-needed win for a team still chasing a postseason spot.
Defensively, Braga controlled the game and limited the Renegades to just 57 total yards. Offensively, the Warriors managed to move the ball consistently enough to secure the victory, even if they failed to capitalize in the red zone.
For the Renegades, offensive struggles continue to define their season. Despite managing two sacks defensively, the team simply could not generate any meaningful production on offense.
With the playoffs now looking increasingly unlikely, the remainder of the season may become an opportunity for Salgueiros to test players and experiment with new schemes as they begin building toward next year.
The game was also marked by several questionable refereeing decisions, an issue that has unfortunately become a recurring talking point throughout the league this season.
Cascais Crusaders 53 – 7 Maia Mutts
The Cascais Crusaders delivered exactly what was expected, defeating the Maia Mutts 53–7 in a dominant performance.
The Mutts entered the game with an even shorter roster than usual, struggling to field a full offensive line throughout the matchup. That lack of depth inevitably became a decisive factor as fatigue set in during the later stages of the game.
Cascais controlled both sides of the line of scrimmage and consistently moved the ball on offense, finishing with 364 total yards.
To their credit, the Mutts managed to produce a touchdown and showed flashes through their passing game, which remained their most productive offensive element. However, over the course of four quarters the physical toll of the matchup became increasingly evident.
For the Crusaders, the upcoming schedule will effectively serve as a preview of the playoffs, with crucial matchups against the Lisboa Navigators and the Lisboa Devils still ahead.
Meanwhile, the Mutts now appear to be entering a development phase similar to the Renegades, using the remaining games to evaluate players and strategies for the future.
Lisboa Navigators 40 – 12 Lisboa Bulldogs
The Lisboa Navigators continued their strong season with a convincing 40–12 victory over the Lisboa Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs entered the matchup looking to bounce back from their previous defeat and did manage to show some offensive production through the passing game. However, their usually reliable rushing attack failed to generate the same level of impact.
The Navigators dominated the trenches on both sides of the ball. Offensively, their rushing game proved unstoppable, finishing with 226 rushing yards. Defensively, their defensive line applied constant pressure on the Bulldogs’ quarterback, forcing him out of the pocket on multiple occasions.
With this result, the Navigators remain undefeated and firmly focused on the playoffs, with key matchups against the Crusaders and the Devils still to come.
For the Bulldogs, the situation becomes increasingly urgent. If they hope to remain in the playoff race, securing a win in the coming weeks will be essential.
Looking Ahead
With the regular season nearing its conclusion, the league’s hierarchy is beginning to crystallize.
The Navigators remain unbeaten, while the Crusaders continue to demonstrate their offensive firepower. Meanwhile, teams like the Warriors are still attempting to force their way into playoff contention.
At the other end of the standings, both the Mutts and the Renegades appear to be shifting toward long-term development as the season progresses.
With decisive matchups still ahead — particularly involving the Crusaders, Navigators, and Devils — the final weeks of the season promise to determine not only playoff seeding, but also which teams truly have the momentum to contend for the championship.
