2026 GFL Power Rankings — Week 18 Update

3 min read

Biggest Takeaway

As the GFL season moves toward the postseason, the league has started to separate into clear tiers. At the top, three teams have consistently looked like the strongest championship threats.

Dresden Monarchs/Potsdam Royals/Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns

The Dresden Monarchs, Potsdam Royals, and Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns have separated themselves from the rest of the GFL.

These are clearly the three strongest teams in the league and the teams best positioned to make a legitimate push at the championship.

Dresden currently gets the slight edge at No. 1, but there is very little separating this group.

All three have shown the ability to control games, win against quality opponents, and play the type of football necessary to survive a postseason run.

At this point, it would be more surprising if the eventual GFL champion came from outside this group than if one of these three finished the job.

Hildesheim Invaders/Pforzheim Wilddogs/Ravensburg Razorbacks

This is where the second tier begins.

The Hildesheim Invaders, Pforzheim Wilddogs, and Ravensburg Razorbacks may not have been as consistently dominant as the top three, but they are legitimate contenders and dangerous enough to ruin things for one of the favorites.

None of these teams should be treated as an easy postseason matchup.

Hildesheim sits at the top of this group and may have the best chance of forcing its way into the championship conversation. The Wilddogs have remained competitive enough to stay within striking distance, while the Razorbacks round out a tier of teams that could make the postseason uncomfortable for anyone.

The top three may be the favorites, but Nos. 4–6 are exactly the type of teams capable of turning the bracket upside down with one strong performance.

Düsseldorf Panthers/Munich Cowboys

The Düsseldorf Panthers and Munich Cowboys sit in an awkward spot.

Both have done enough to remain relevant, but neither has shown enough consistency to be considered a serious championship threat.

Making the playoffs is one thing. Winning once they get there is another.

Based on what these teams have shown over the full season, it would be surprising to see either Düsseldorf or Munich make it out of the opening round. They have enough talent to make a game competitive, but beating one of the league’s elite teams when the margin for error shrinks considerably is a different challenge.

Regensburg Phoenix/Braunschweig Lions/Kiel Baltic Hurricanes

The next three fall into the category of teams that simply could not string enough quality performances together.

The Regensburg Phoenix, Braunschweig Lions, and Kiel Baltic Hurricanes each had moments where it looked like they might be able to make a push, but those moments never became sustained stretches of winning football.

That’s ultimately what separated this group from the playoff teams.

They weren’t necessarily incapable of competing on a given week, but over the course of the season they left too many opportunities on the table and never developed the consistency required to break into the postseason field.

Berlin Rebels

The Berlin Rebels were one of the bigger disappointments of the season.

There was enough talent on the roster for Berlin to be more competitive than its final position suggests, but the pieces never consistently came together.

At different points, there were flashes of a team that could potentially climb the standings, but offensive inconsistency and an inability to put complete games together ultimately kept the Rebels near the bottom of the league.

For a team that entered the year with the potential to be more competitive, the season has to be considered a letdown.

Saarland Hurricanes/Allgäu Comets/Straubing Spiders

There isn’t much separation needed here.

The Saarland Hurricanes, Allgäu Comets, and Straubing Spiders never consistently looked competitive enough to threaten the upper half of the GFL.

There may have been individual stretches or games where each showed signs of improvement, but over the course of the season the gap between these teams and the legitimate playoff contenders was clear.

They round out the rankings as the bottom tier of the league.
